So I had my first visit to a english cinema yesterday, just to see an original english movie:
The theme of the movie was already one of my favourites (ah...help me...I'm already getting to spell words the british way. That *has* to stop!): Vampires! Yes. So because I didn't know anything about the movie apart from that I was curious about what to come.
So basically the movie is about a war between Vampires and Lycans (equals Werewolves) and they fight one another. Which is quite confusing in the beginning, because you can't really keep the two races apart from one another, not during the fighting scenes. At least not until the Lycans actually transform to werewolves.
The movie's fashion can be compared to Matrix-style, and the setting somehow looks like a crossing of Gotham City and Blade's scenario.
All of the main actors were playing their roles in a real cool way. Well, again it can be compared to movies like
The Matrix and
Equilibrium. An emotionless way, but really looking cool - not in a stupid way.
Kate Beckinsale, playing Selene, is really good-looking in her leather-clothing suited for Vampires. I even think she would have made a better Trinity; her acting was quite credible and she kept me fixed to the screen.
The male main-character is also worth mentioning: Even though I know him of romantic girlie-movies and he's really quite good looking, his acting was good and fun to look at.
There also was this black werewolf-character. A huge pile of muscles and his voice is like ten feets below earth. Massive coolness-factor, you have to listen to him by any chance
But back to the movie: There are a lot of fighting scenes, a lot of acrobatic action, stop-motion/slow-motion scenes and quite good special effects. The werevolves (and their transformation) looks great, the fighting-choreography is great. Basically, everything you can see on the screen is good entertainment and well-done. The rebirth of the main Vampire is one of the best resurrection scenes I have ever seen, I was immediately reminded of the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles taking a copy of that.
Speaking of that, the story itself can't compare to what Anne Rice gets out of a Vamiric Setting. The story could be easily done without Vampires or Werevolves, replacing them with normal humans battling each other. This is definitely the major drawback in the whole movie, because I thought I would see more of vampiric interaction or specialties.
But the movie was nevertheless really entertaining! And because of it's coolness factor I'll give it 7 Points. Completely ignoring the story, though.
